Additionally, a lot of GPs believed that psychiatry liaison was not adequately funded and oversubscribed.
The findings of this study revealed that GPs rely more heavily on existing relationships and knowledge to make referral decisions rather than on the specific needs of a patient. The recordings of all meetings revealed this. CMHT leaders and Psychiatrists also spoke out about their views on the competence of each individual GPs and this was evident in all of the meetings recorded.
It is important to remember that the right to choose applies to both treatments as well as assessments, including neurodevelopmental diagnostic assessment. The current pandemic has caused a massive increase in the number of people who are referred to mental health teams within their communities for help. This has led to an increase in demand for psychiatry assessment and a higher workload for staff. It was difficult for GPs to keep pace with referrals due to the rapid onset of pandemic. We conducted a qualitative study within an experimental study that used a randomised control to study the effectiveness of various strategies aimed at to improve the quality of referrals for mental health. This included interviews with doctors, community mental health team (CMHT) consultants and recording of the referral allocation meetings. The findings of the study proved that the use of a custom referral route was a successful way to manage the workload of GPs as well as CMHTs, while also providing patients with the choice they need to be treated effectively.
